The Hershey Bears won their league Leading 13th Calder Cup (and Second in a row for the second time (09′-10′)) on Monday June 14th 2024 – and you could tell they wanted it. Not to downplay Coachella Valley’s effort, or say that the Firebirds, amongst every other team in the league, didn’t want it, but you could tell. Hershey Wanted it.
From games early in this series where the Bears were outscored 6-2, to back and fourth games where the Firebirds constantly had an answer for Hershey’s efforts, the Bears were putting fourth the exact opposite last night. Every single time the Firebirds scored (including the first goal of the day 1:37 into the game), it felt the Bears immediately had an answer, refusing the Firebirds a lead, almost saying “nope, we’re winning this NOW I am NOT coming back in on Wednesday!”.
That immediate response includes when the Firebirds tied it up 4-4 with a little more than 3 minutes left (the 17:05 mark) in the third period. The Bears then netted their game winning Goal after A minute and six seconds on the ice in overtime!
