- Sahlen Field – Buffalo, NY – Home of the Buffalo Bisons
Our time in Buffalo was quite interesting. The stadium itself was interesting. After a short walk through a little bit of the city, we found our way to the highway….which dang near literally ran through the stadium (we’ll get back to that point later though). Anyway, the Bisons were hosting “Hockey Night” as the theme of our game, donning Buffalo Sabres (the city’s NHL Franchise) inspired jerseys, in their classic blue with gold stripes look, plus Hockey inspired on-field games, and even an appearance from the Sabres beloved mascot, Sabretooth.
theme aside, I was amazed at how large, and almost professional – as in MLB like – the stadium was. For some reason, the cement, completely walled in concourse gave me major Major League vibes, which would make sense if the rumored reason for the stadium existing is true (the MLB once “promised” Buffalo/that area an MLB team if they had the room to make a stadium of size). The park had a very large lower bowl height wise, like ALMOST “The Diamond” in Richmond level, with a smaller bowl on the top.
After taking our seats down the third base side, I realized the road just outside the Left field wall, was in fact, a highway on ramp. in order to get this article rollng, and not drag it on with menial descriptions of the entire place, lets put some meat on this bone and get to the good stuff. So, late in the game, we decided to go into the outfield area to get another vantage point for our photos, which is where both of Scott’s camera batteries decided to pass away, and leave him with no functioning camera. So, like any person living in a society would do, he found (what seemed to be) an unused extension cord hanging over a wall just past the foul poll, and plugged his camera in to charge for an inning or two.
Luckily, nothing seemed to happen when the cord was unplugged and used as a makeshift camera charger. After he got a few volts from the lighting towers, we went back to our seats to get ready for the post game fireworks! little did we know, this would be the scariest event we’ve ever attended (sorry Halloween Horror Nights). as they were setting up the fireworks, I noticed two firetrucks blocking off the on ramp to the highway (literally, we were THAT close to the highway) as they set up the fireworks in a little hole between the highway and the outfield wall….then….the show started.

I wanted to put the picture first, because I wasn’t sure if I could come up with words to describe exactly what this experience was like. BASICALLY, because of the lack of space out there, and again, the proximity to the overbanking highway bridge, the fireworks were shooting off in the outfield, going every which direction, yes, including toward the fans in the stands, and honestly most notably, the freaking highway. Like, you could hear horns and screeching. Now, I know this can’t be something new for locals, but the passing traffic from out of state seemed just as freaked out as we were.
I don’t have all too much more to say about that, aside from I’m actually not too sure I’d recommend going to a fireworks night in Buffalo. I’m not one of those online karens etc etc, I don’t have any complaints, and obviously if it wasn’t safe, they wouldn’t be doing it anymore, I just don’t think one should be able to get this close to active mega show fireworks.
